Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
I hate to say it, but it is hot outside. How long until October?
1. The coming week: On Saturday afternoon, beginning at noon, we will have our first annual parish picnic and barbecue. It will be held at the church, and should be excellent. I have even heard rumors of lamb kebobs, so do try to make it, or else I may feel obliged to eat them all.
At 6:00 pm Saturday we will serve Great Vespers for the Sunday of the Paralytic, with Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. I need to meet with the parish council following that.
Wednesday evening we will serve Great Compline at 6:00 pm, followed immediately thereafter by Inquirers Class. It felt good to restart that last Wednesday.
2. Missions workshop: Looking farther afield, and spearheaded by Subdeacon Maximus, we will have a Missions workshop on Friday evening, June 21, and Saturday June 22. We will take that time to learn of the missions landscape, and take stock of where St. Nicholas is in fulfilling its evangelical function. That is the weekend after Pentecost. More details will be coming soon.
3. Many thanks to the great number of people who devote so much time and energy to our parish. It seems like every time I come to the Church there is someone there working, or the evidence of work is plainly apparent. This past week, much cleaning took place, and the flower boxes around the porch were filled in. Other times, beautiful flowers appear in the Church, and liturgical furnishings, made by hand, appear on the porch. It is a wonderful thing when the people of the Church take ownership of the Church. St. Nicholas is not me, it is not the parish council. It is home to us all. Many, many thanks to all of the people who work so hard, and are so generous with their time and talents.
I hope to see you all this weekend!
